Daybed vs Divan Bed: Which Layout Works Better in Your Singapore Bedroom?

A bed can fit inside a bedroom and still make the room awkward to use. The drawer may hit the wardrobe, the side panel may block your bedside table, or the mattress may be harder to tuck in than you expected.

When comparing a daybed and a divan bed for a Singapore home, start with how you want to use the room. A daybed can create a place to sit along a wall as well as sleep. An open-sided divan can be easier to approach from either side. Neither automatically takes up less space: the frame dimensions and the clearance around it decide that.

What is the difference between a daybed and a divan bed?

A daybed commonly has a back panel along one long side and panels at one or both ends, giving it a sofa-like outline. It uses a mattress for sleeping, and can also work as a daytime reading or lounging spot.

A divan describes the bed’s supporting base. Many divan beds have a headboard and open long sides, making them familiar choices for a main bedroom. Some include storage, while others use a simpler base on legs.

These terms describe different aspects of a bed, so product names alone can be confusing. Check the actual shape, mattress support, storage arrangement and access points in the photos and specifications.

Compare the way each layout uses your room

Layout Useful when What to check
Daybed with a long back panel You want sleeping and daytime seating along a wall Internal mattress space, access from the open side and any drawer clearance
Bed with partial side panels You like an enclosed feel around the head of the bed Where the panels end and whether they obstruct bedside furniture
Open-sided divan You want simpler access from the long sides Walking space, overall bed height and cleaning clearance beneath the base

1. Plan access before you choose the frame

Picture an ordinary morning: getting out of bed, reaching the wardrobe, opening a drawer and making the bed. Your layout needs to accommodate each of those movements.

A daybed against a wall leaves its open side as the main access point. That can work well in a room that also holds a desk, but the far edge of the mattress may be harder to reach when changing sheets. An open-sided divan gives more options if you leave room on both long sides. Placing it against a wall removes that advantage.

Use removable tape to mark the frame’s full external width and length on the floor. Then open the bedroom door and wardrobe doors, and move your desk chair as you normally would. This is a more useful test than checking whether the mattress rectangle fits.

2. Check mattress fit more carefully with enclosed panels

For a bed surrounded by upholstered panels, ask for the usable internal mattress dimensions. The frame’s external dimensions include its upholstery and structure; they do not describe the space your mattress occupies.

If you already own a mattress, measure its widest and longest points, including edge piping or a bulging quilted border. Send those measurements to the store before ordering. A size label such as “Super Single” does not establish the exact fit of an individual mattress and frame.

Ask about suitable mattress thickness too. A taller mattress changes the finished bed height and how much of the surrounding panels remains above it. Confirm compatibility with the specific frame instead of assuming that a mattress shown in a styled photo is included or suitable in every thickness.

If you are still deciding on a size, our bed sizes guide for Singapore explains the main options. Once you have a shortlist, verify the actual measurements with the store.

3. Include storage in the floor plan

A storage drawer needs space outside the bed when it opens. Measure that opening space as well as the closed frame, and check whether a rug, stool or wardrobe will be in the way.

Also separate storage from sleeping capacity. A pull-out storage drawer is for belongings. A trundle is a separate sleeping platform. Do not assume that a drawer can take a mattress simply because it slides out beneath the bed.

Product example: Pixie Day Bed

The Pixie Day Bed with Storage Drawer & Step Stool illustrates the enclosed daybed layout. Its catalogue lists wrap-around panels, an under-bed storage drawer and a matching two-step stool, with Single and Super Single frame-only options.

For this design, draw the stool’s footprint and the open drawer onto your room plan. Confirm the usable mattress space and recommended thickness before choosing a mattress. The drawer is listed as storage; this model should not be treated as a trundle bed.

4. Decide how much side enclosure you actually want

Full-length panels are not the only option. A bed with shorter side panels can retain an open foot end while giving the upper part of the bed a more enclosed appearance.

Check where the panels finish relative to where you usually sit to get in and out. Also consider your bedside table: a side panel can change the position from which you reach its surface or drawers.

Product example: Elaris Fabric Bed Frame

The Elaris Fabric Bed Frame with Side Guard Panels has an arched headboard, half-length side panels, an open foot end and an exterior storage pocket. It is available in Single, Super Single, Queen and King sizes.

It is a useful example of a layout between an open-sided bed and a more enclosed daybed. Ask for the complete external width, panel length and internal mattress space so you can compare it with your existing furniture.

5. Think about cleaning and changing sheets

Panels, drawers and legs affect the small jobs you repeat each week. Upholstered corners and seams need attention when vacuuming. A bed against the wall can make the far mattress corners harder to reach. A storage base may require a different cleaning approach from a raised frame.

If you use a robot vacuum, compare its height with the actual underside clearance, and check whether central supports or other obstructions affect its route. Leg height alone does not guarantee that a particular vacuum will fit beneath the whole bed.

Product example: Orlena Fabric Divan Bed Frame

The Orlena Fabric Divan Bed Frame shows the simpler, open-sided approach. Its listing specifies a 5-inch divan base, 4-inch tapered legs and a 100cm headboard, with Single through King sizes.

If access and cleaning are your priorities, compare this configuration with the enclosed designs above. Confirm the actual underside clearance and the finished bed height with your chosen mattress rather than relying only on the listed base and leg measurements.

A short checklist before ordering

  • Measure the frame’s external footprint and the mattress space inside it.
  • Allow for drawer opening, stools, door swings and wardrobe access.
  • Confirm your mattress’s actual dimensions, thickness and support requirements.
  • Check how you will reach the mattress corners when changing sheets.
  • Confirm the fabric colour, care instructions, delivery access and any surcharges.

The three linked listings currently state delivery in 7–14 working days and ask buyers to specify a preferred colour at checkout or contact the store after ordering. Confirm the arrangement for your address before payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a daybed save more space than a divan?

It depends on the full frame dimensions and your layout. A daybed may combine lounging and sleeping in one piece, but panels, a stool or an open storage drawer can increase the space it needs. Compare the complete working footprint.

Can I use my existing mattress with a daybed?

Possibly. Confirm its actual width, length and thickness against the specific frame’s internal mattress space and support requirements. Include protruding edge piping in your measurements.

Is a daybed drawer the same as a trundle?

No. A storage drawer holds belongings. A trundle is designed as a separate sleeping platform. Check the product specification for the feature you need.

Which layout is easier to make each morning?

An open-sided bed with access on both sides generally gives you more room to reach the mattress edges. For a daybed or any bed against a wall, consider how you will tuck in the far corners and change fitted sheets.
