A bed that looks right in a showroom can feel enormous once it's in your bedroom. If you're choosing between bed sizes in Singapore, here's the short version. Single and super single suit one sleeper. Queen is the smallest size that works for two adults. King only makes sense if the room can take it with walking space on both sides.
The rest of this guide shows you how to check that before you order.
The four bed sizes in Singapore, side by side
Mattress sizes vary slightly between brands, so treat these as approximate and check the spec on the product page. The last column shows the narrowest room that still leaves about 60 cm to walk on each side of the bed.
| Size | Approx. mattress size | Usually suits | Room width needed* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single | 91 × 190 cm | One child or teen, guest room | about 2.1 m |
| Super Single | 107 × 190 cm | One adult who wants more room | about 2.3 m |
| Queen | 152 × 190 cm | Two adults, or one adult who likes to sprawl | about 2.7 m |
| King | 183 × 190 cm | Two adults who want space, or a couple sharing with a child or pet | about 3.0 m |
*Bed width plus 60 cm each side. If one side of the bed sits against a wall, subtract 60 cm.
These are simple sums, but people skip them surprisingly often. A king bed in a room that's 2.8 m wide technically fits, but you'll be shuffling sideways to reach the wardrobe.
Single vs super single: is the extra width worth it?
A super single is only about 16 cm wider than a single. That sounds small, but it's the difference between your elbow hanging off the edge or not when you turn over.
For a child's room, a single is usually enough. For an adult sleeping alone, the super single is the better pick if you have the space. For a teenager who's still growing, it saves you buying again in a few years.
It also doesn't cost much more. On the Calden Divan Bed Frame, the frame-only price goes from $229 (single) to $259 (super single), a $30 difference at the time of writing. It's one of the lower-priced frames in our divan bed collection, and it comes in all four sizes.
Queen or king? How to decide when two people share the bed
Do the arithmetic on this one. On a queen, each person gets about 76 cm of width. A single bed gives one person about 91 cm. On a king, each person gets roughly 91 cm, the same as sleeping in a single bed.
So if either of you is a restless sleeper, or you share the bed with a child or a pet, the queen can feel tight. If the room is small, a king can make the whole bedroom feel like it's just a bed.
Price steps differ between models, so check the size you actually want:
- On our Divan Bed Frame with Mattress Set, the frame-only price goes from $359 (queen) to $429 (king).
- On the Modern Upholstered Microfiber Storage Bed Frame, it goes from $679 to $879.
How to measure your bedroom before choosing a bed size
Do this before you look at any product page.
- Measure wall to wall, both width and length. Write down where the door opens and which way it swings.
- Mark the bed on the floor. Use masking tape to outline the mattress size, then add the headboard. Walk around it. This takes five minutes and beats any floor plan.
- Check the walkways. Aim for about 60 cm on the sides you'll actually walk. A bit less on a side you rarely use is fine.
- Check your wardrobe doors and drawers. Swing doors need room to open fully, and a bed that blocks them gets annoying fast.
- Leave space for bedside tables. It's easy to forget these when you're focused on the bed itself.
Bed frame size vs mattress size
The mattress size is not the size of the bed. The frame is larger, and by how much depends on the design. Padded headboards, thick side rims and chunky bases all add to the footprint.
Height matters too. The storage bed frame mentioned above has a base listed at 35 cm. Add an 11-inch mattress (about 28 cm) and the bed sits quite high. Some people like that because it's easier to get in and out of. Others find it too tall in a smaller room. The same frame has rounded corners on the base, which helps in tight rooms where you're walking past the bed every day.
If you're also choosing a mattress, our mattress buying guide covers firmness and materials, and the mattress collection has the full range.
Small bedrooms: when a smaller bed or a different type makes more sense
If your room is tight, going down one size is often the right call. A queen in a small room usually works better than a king, and a super single usually works better than a queen if you're sleeping alone.
You can also change the type of bed instead. Our guide to space-saving bed frames covers the options, and the pull-out bed collection is worth a look for children's rooms or guest rooms that don't need a full bed every night. If you need somewhere to put things, the storage bed collection is the next stop, and our storage bed frames guide explains how they differ.
Which size should you pick?
- Child's room or guest room: single.
- One adult, enough space: super single.
- Two adults, average-sized bedroom: queen.
- Two adults, large bedroom, or sharing with a child or pet: king, but only if the room is around 3 m wide or more.
- Not sure: tape it out on the floor and live with it for a day.
FAQ
Is a queen bed big enough for two adults?
Yes, for most couples. Each person gets about 76 cm of width. If either of you sleeps restlessly or you share with a child or pet, a king is more comfortable, provided the room can take it.
Can a king bed fit in an HDB bedroom?
It depends on the room, not the flat type. A king mattress is about 183 cm wide, so you need roughly 3 m of room width to leave 60 cm on each side. Measure your actual bedroom and tape out the bed before ordering.
What is the difference between single and super single?
A super single is about 16 cm wider than a single, with the same length. It's comfortable for one adult but not for two.
Is the bed frame the same size as the mattress?
No. The frame is usually larger, depending on the headboard and base design. Check the frame's outer dimensions on the product page, not just the mattress size.
What size bed is best for a small bedroom?
For one person, a single or super single. For a couple, a queen. In a very small room, look at space-saving beds or pull-out beds instead of going smaller than the sleepers need.
