Extendable Dining Tables for Singapore Homes: Measure Them Open and Closed

An extendable dining table can leave more room for daily life and open up for visitors. But the closed measurement only tells you how it fits between meals. Before ordering, you also need to know where everyone will sit, how the extension opens and whether you can still walk to the kitchen.

For a Singapore home with a dining area beside the living room or kitchen, check both arrangements on the floor. A table that opens successfully can still leave a chair trapped against a wall.

Start with two footprints: everyday meals and guests

Measure the usable dining area from the nearest obstacles: a wall, kitchen counter, sideboard or sofa back. Keep door swings and the route to bedrooms or the balcony on your sketch. An open-plan room may look generous while having only one practical place for dining chairs.

  1. Mark the closed tabletop. Use removable tape suitable for your floor. Label the length and width so you can compare models without mixing up the measurements.
  2. Mark the fully extended tabletop in another colour. Include any change in width or shape. Check which edges actually move before deciding where to put the second outline.
  3. Place chairs around each outline. Pull them back, sit down and stand up. Ask someone to walk behind a seated person along the route you use most.
  4. Open nearby doors and drawers. Test the sideboard, fridge or kitchen entrance with the chairs in use.

The tape shows the tabletop boundary. Chairs, people and the space needed to operate the extension all sit outside that boundary. Include them before deciding that the table fits.

Compare these five tables open and closed

All measurements below are in centimetres, taken from the product listings. Rectangular sizes are length × width × height. The round model is listed by diameter when open.

Open and closed dimensions of five extendable dining tables
Table Closed Fully open What changes
Sintered stone set with black or beige chairs 120 × 80 × 76 150 × 80 × 76 30 cm longer
Nordic wooden set with grey cushions 140 × 90 × 75.2 170 × 90 × 75.2 30 cm longer
Solid rubber wood set with classic chairs 160 × 90 × 75 200 × 90 × 75 40 cm longer
Solid rubber wood set with chairs and bench 130 × 80 × 75 190 × 80 × 75 60 cm longer
Round extendable sintered stone set 135 × 85 × 79 135 cm diameter × 79 high 50 cm wider; length stays 135 cm

These are tabletop dimensions, not the total space required for the dining set. Confirm current dimensions and any manufacturing tolerance before ordering, especially if your layout leaves little spare room.

What the measurements mean in a real layout

120 to 150 cm: a smaller everyday footprint

Table: 120–150 cm long, 80 cm wide and 76 cm high.

The 120–150 cm sintered stone dining set starts with the shortest closed length in this comparison. It adds 30 cm in length while keeping an 80 cm width. Four chairs are included, with black or beige options.

The listed chairs measure 49 cm wide and 58 cm deep. Mark those alongside the tabletop rather than assuming a compact table means compact seating. Check the end nearest your kitchen or corridor with a person sitting there.

140 to 170 cm: check the extra tabletop width

Table: 140–170 cm long, 90 cm wide and 75.2 cm high.

The Nordic wooden extendable dining set adds the same 30 cm of length, but its tabletop is 90 cm wide. Compared with an 80 cm model, that uses another 10 cm across the room. If centred in the same position, it takes 5 cm from the available gap on each side.

This set includes four grey cushioned chairs, listed at 45 cm wide and 53.3 cm deep. Compare their dimensions with your taped layout, and check the leg positions before adding chairs for visitors.

160 to 200 cm: allow for the closed size first

Table: 160–200 cm long, 90 cm wide and 75 cm high.

The solid rubber wood set with classic chairs measures 160 cm long before extension and 200 cm when open. Its closed length already exceeds the fully open length of the 120–150 cm set.

That makes the daily arrangement the first test. If the closed table crowds the living area, the extension feature will not solve that problem. For the open arrangement, test the chairs at both ends and any route between the dining area and sofa.

130 to 190 cm: plan where the bench goes

Table: 130–190 cm long, 80 cm wide and 75 cm high; four chairs and one bench included.

The rubber wood set with chairs and bench has a 130 cm closed length and gains 60 cm when fully extended, the largest length increase here.

Plan where the bench and all four chairs will go in both arrangements. Ask for the bench dimensions and the clear distance between the table legs before assuming it will tuck completely underneath. Bench users also need a way to get in and out without moving several people.

Rectangle to round: measure sideways

Closed: 135 × 85 cm. Open: 135 cm diameter. Height: 79 cm.

The round extendable sintered stone set changes from a listed 135 × 85 cm rectangle to a 135 cm diameter circle. Its length stays the same; its width grows by 50 cm.

If its centre stays in the same place, the open tabletop reaches 25 cm farther on each side. Mark that change next to a wall or kitchen counter. The set includes four PU chairs in tan or grey options. Its 79 cm table height is also worth checking if you plan to use existing chairs.

Calculate the space around the open table

Use this calculation in each direction: table dimension + space on one side + space on the opposite side = total space to test.

For example, suppose you choose to test a 90 cm allowance from each table edge. A 190 × 80 cm table would need a marked area of 370 × 260 cm: 190 + 90 + 90 along its length, and 80 + 90 + 90 across its width. A 135 cm round table with the same allowance would need a 315 × 315 cm bounding area.

The 90 cm allowance is an illustrative planning choice, not a guarantee of comfortable passage. Test your chairs and household movements. A busy route behind occupied seats may need more room, and mobility needs may require a different layout.

Do not automatically split the extra table length equally between both ends. A 60 cm extension might change the footprint differently depending on the mechanism and whether you reposition the table. Ask which parts move and where a person needs to stand while opening it.

Check these details before ordering online

  • Extension operation: request a demonstration video if the listing does not show the full opening sequence, supports and locking steps.
  • Leaf storage: confirm whether the extension stores inside the table or needs a separate storage space.
  • Legroom: ask for clear distances between legs or around the base in both positions. Tabletop length alone does not establish seating capacity.
  • Extra seating: check what the set includes and where additional chairs will be stored between visits.
  • Delivery access: confirm the largest delivered component or package against your lift, doorway and entrance turn.

Grandeur Furnishings operates online without a showroom. Before ordering, send us the product link, your room measurements and a photo of the proposed dining area so we can clarify the listed dimensions and any missing product details.

Common questions about extendable dining table sizes

Can a table that fits closed still be too large when open?

Yes. The open tabletop may fit while leaving insufficient space to pull out chairs or reach another room. Test both arrangements with occupied seating.

Does a set with four chairs become a six-seater when extended?

An extension adds tabletop space, but the usable seating depends on chair width, leg positions and room clearance. Four included chairs do not establish the maximum comfortable seating capacity.

Which measurement should I use for a table that opens into a circle?

Use the open diameter in both directions. For the model above, that means checking 135 cm across the room as well as 135 cm along it, before adding chair space.
